Agentic commerce
marketagentic checkout · agent-initiated payments
Buying where the agent does the work -searching, comparing and increasingly paying- while the merchant is still the one who charges the card, confirms the order and handles the complaint.
Two things separate it from ordinary e-commerce. First, the decision moves upstream into a conversation the merchant no longer sees in full. In the August 2026 launch of hotel booking inside AI Mode, Google passes partners only the minimum needed to complete the booking -name, payment, occupancy, property- and keeps the context; the hotel or OTA remains the merchant of record that charges and supports. Second, payment needs new parts, because European strong customer authentication is tied to a person and the thing pressing the button no longer is one. Hence single-use virtual cards scoped to one transaction, and agentic payment protocols. For an operations team this is not a marketing trend: it is a permission boundary, a record of who authorised what, and a new place where refunds get argued.
How it differs from
- Shopping chatbot
- A chatbot recommends and sends you back to checkout. In agentic commerce the agent executes the transaction, which changes who is liable for it.
- Classic e-commerce
- In classic e-commerce the customer walks the product page, cart and payment. In agentic commerce the agent walks it, and the merchant loses sight of the journey.
Examples
- An agent books a hotel inside a chat, and the hotel still charges, confirms and sorts out the problem.
- A single-use virtual card scoped to one purchase so the agent never touches the customer's payment credentials.
FAQ
- Who is liable when the agent buys the wrong thing?
- In the EU there is no special regime today: payment services rules apply. A transaction the customer did not authorise generally remains the payment service provider's liability, and the PSP will also have to explain why the agent decided what it decided. Which is why limits, human confirmation and traceability are not paperwork: they are how the loss gets allocated.
- What does a seller have to get ready?
- A catalogue a model can actually read, a payment path designed for agents, and returns and support that still work when the buyer was not a person. The first is visibility; the second and third are operations.
