AI Operations · Role
AI Workflow Engineer
The AI Workflow Engineer designs and builds complex workflows where humans and agents combine. A step beyond one-off automation: they orchestrate the whole process.
What they do
- Design workflows that combine human and agent steps.
- Build the orchestration and the control points (human-in-the-loop).
- Instrument the flow to measure reliability and bottlenecks.

The market uses several titles for the same role:
How it changes by seniority
- Junior — Builds defined workflow steps and wires them up under supervision.
- Mid — Designs human+agent workflows with control points and instruments them.
- Senior — Reliable orchestration architecture at scale; fixes bottlenecks and regressions.
When to hire
When your processes have several steps and automating one isn't enough.
When not to
If you only need to automate an isolated task: an Automation Specialist is enough.
Interview questions
1. Design a workflow where an agent drafts, a human approves and another agent executes. Where do you place the control points?
What to look for: Puts human-in-the-loop where risk demands it, not everywhere; thinks about the hand-off.
2. How do you instrument a multi-step workflow to find the bottleneck?
What to look for: Traces each step (latency, failures) and measures reliability per segment, not just the final result.
3. A workflow step fails intermittently. How do you design so it doesn’t take down the whole process?
What to look for: Talks retries, idempotency and durable state; isolates the failure.
4. When does a process NOT justify an orchestrated workflow and a simple automation suffices?
What to look for: Knows orchestration has a cost; doesn’t apply it to an isolated task.
Scorecard
- Human-in-the-loop design — Places control points where risk demands, neither too many nor too few.
- Robust orchestration — Handles retries, idempotency and durable state; one step failing doesn’t sink the flow.
- Process observability — Instruments each segment to see reliability and bottlenecks.
- Complexity judgement — Applies orchestration only when the process justifies it.
Red flags
- — Adds a human to approve every step "for safety" and chokes the flow.
- — Doesn’t think about what happens when an intermediate step fails.
- — Over-engineering: builds an orchestrated workflow for what was a script.
