Agentic services vs agentic operations

Operating model

agentic services · agentic operations · agent-delivered services

An Implementa editorial distinction. «Agentic services» is what you sell: an outcome delivered by agents. «Agentic operations» is what you have to build inside to deliver it repeatably: registry, permissions, sandbox, measurement, owners. Confusing the two is why a brilliant pilot never turns into a business.

Transparency note: this distinction is not market consensus and not standards terminology. It is Implementa's own editorial framing, used as a diagnostic tool rather than an accepted taxonomy. An agentic service is described from the outside: what work it delivers, in what time, with what guarantee, at what price. Its unit is the outcome. An agentic operation is described from the inside: which agents exist, who owns them, what they can touch, how they're tested before they touch production, how they're measured, and who switches them off. Its unit is the human-hours you stop spending per client served. The common failure is selling the first without having built the second. You deliver once, heroically; the second client costs what the first did and the margin evaporates. The subtler failure is the inverse: immaculate agentic operations wired to no outcome anyone pays for. The question that separates them: does the tenth client cost less than the first? If not, you have a service — and not yet operations.

How it differs from

Agent-as-a-service
Agent-as-a-service sells access to an agent; an agentic service sells the finished work.
AIOps
AIOps applies AI to running IT; agentic operations is running agents that do business work.

Examples

  • Packaging an agent-delivered monthly report with an SLA and a fixed price: agentic service
  • Standing up the registry, permissions and measurement so ten pods can produce that report without heroics: agentic operations

FAQ

Is this standard terminology?
No. It's Implementa's own framing. Use it as a diagnostic; don't present it as industry consensus.
Which comes first?
The service defines what to build. But if it's sold before the operational minimum exists, what you've signed is a commitment only hands can honour.
