Agent sprawl

governance

AI agent sprawl · ungoverned agent sprawl

AI agents getting built, deployed and wired into systems faster than the company can inventory them, assign an owner, control their permissions and retire them once they stop earning their keep.

Agent sprawl isn't a volume problem. It's an ownership problem. Every team ships its own — support, marketing, procurement — and each one runs in isolation with its own credentials, its own data access and nobody's name on it. What you end up with is a fleet that doesn't interoperate, can't be audited consistently, and piles up technical debt faster than it generates value. The tell: nobody in your company can answer on the spot how many agents are in production, who owns each one, and what breaks if you switch one off tomorrow. The fix isn't a ban. It's a census (AI inventory), a named owner (AI process owner), and making shutdown as easy as launch.

How it differs from

Shadow AI
Shadow AI is AI that IT doesn't know exists. Agent sprawl can be fully approved and documented and still be ungovernable: the problem isn't secrecy, it's the missing owner and the missing lifecycle.
SaaS sprawl
SaaS sprawl piles up apps that sit there waiting to be used. Agents act on their own: they reach data, execute decisions and inherit permissions. The risk isn't the bill, it's what they do while nobody's watching.

Examples

  • Four teams have shipped four agents that all write to the same CRM, and none of them knows about the other three.
  • An agent from a pilot that closed eight months ago still holds a valid token and write access to production.

FAQ

How many agents count as sprawl?
No number. You have sprawl the moment you can't answer off the top of your head how many agents are in production, who owns each one, and how they get switched off. You can have it with six agents and not have it with sixty.
Does a platform fix it?
A central platform helps because it unifies identity, permissions and traces. But buying tooling without assigning an owner per agent and without a retirement process just moves where the mess accumulates.
